Robert Taub recorded Scriabin's 10 piano sonatas between 1988 and 1990, and his set was released in 1994 by Harmonia Mundi. Taub's interpretations are subtle and highly varied, and not of a consistent type -- neither excessively vaporous nor relentlessly hammered -- which is what Scriabin's scores show: the ebb and flow of emotions and moods are indicated in the proliferation of expression markings and tempo fluctuations, and the music clearly calls for a fluid, intuitive approach. Taub's interpretations of the first three sonatas are Chopin-esque and firmly defined in the Romantic tradition; but the increasing complexity and growing megalomaniacal eroticism of Scriabin's music -- especially pronounced in the last five sonatas -- elicits a fully rhapsodic and spontaneous treatment from this pianist. Compared to Vladimir Ashkenazy's driven recordings, Taub's may seem enervated and languid; when matched against Roberto Szidon's legendary set, it may seem a little less than imaginative. Still, this is one of the best cycles available, and the differences with Ashkenazy and Szidon are only in degrees of interpretation, not in overall excellence. Harmonia Mundi's sound quality is resonant and enjoyably realistic, though a bit soft in spots.
