Rapa Nui Odyssey came about when software executive Dave Fulton and his wife traveled to the Pacific Ocean island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and discovered pianist Mahani Teave teaching in her small music school there, playing on an upright piano that was apparently the first one ever brought to the island. It emerged that Teave, born in Hawaii but raised on Rapa Nui, had been trained on the Chilean mainland, at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, and toured internationally. Although signed to the Steinway & Sons label, she never released an album there. She returned to Rapa Nui to open her school and raise a family. Fulton made the arrangements for the present CD, all proceeds from which benefit the Toki Rapa Nui Music School. Listeners will want the physical CDs for this reason and also because this is likely the only album available with booklet notes in the Rapa Nui language. Furthermore, it would be a shame to miss the fine engineering from the Nordstrom Recital Hall in Seattle and the pictures of Teave's school in the booklet. The music-making itself is enjoyable. The program of Bach, Liszt, Handel, Scriabin, Chopin, and Rachmaninov is conventional, but Teave has a novel style that substitutes fantasy for power. Listeners may welcome her reading of Liszt's Ballade No. 2 in B minor, S. 171; in a world of pounded-out Liszt ballades, Teave's stands out as poetic. Her Chopin is delicate and deliberate. Another attraction is a traditional song from Rapa Nui at the end, sung by an unidentified vocalist (and, interestingly, not translated) and accompanied by Teave; it's quite absorbing. A thoroughly offbeat recital.
