Con el álbum Quickies, que acaba de editar Nonesuch, Stephin Merritt, el hombre orquesta que se encuentra tras el nombre The Magnetic Fields (un homenaje no al tema de Jean-Michel Jarre sino a Champs magnétiques, libro de los surrealistas franceses André Breton y Philippe Soupault), vuelve a la carga, siempre cultivando su credo repleto de desfases, ironía folclórica low-fi, en la línea de un Beck o un Adam Green (con temas como The Biggest Tits in History o I Wish I Were a Prostitute Again). Extremadamente prolífico, el bostoniano multiplica sus avatares y aventuras (The 6ths, The Gothic Archies o Future Bible Heroes), mientras mantiene su enfoque centrado en el absurdo y la fantasía. Después de un último álbum-festín titulado 50 Song Memoir (2017) que incluye cincuenta temas de otros tantos años pasados sobre la tierra, Merritt se aligera ahora con este Quickies, veintiocho canciones extremadamente cortas (Death Pact (Let’s Make A) sólo dura 17 segundos!), abordando los temas más diversos y variados.
