A strong (if belated) first album in 1985's Future Warriors and seemingly promising live engagements in support of Slayer, Exodus, and Venom couldn't help but raise expectations for Atomkraft's next move, which is why 1986's Queen of Death EP proved especially disappointing. Made up mostly of rejigged early demos like "Demolition," "Funeral Pyre," and the acoustic oddity "Mode 3," the release also debuted a new, four-piece lineup that excluded former leading man Tony Dolan -- despite the fact his songwriting and even a few bass parts still featured on the release. In the event, new vocalist Ian Swift generally only managed to make Atomkraft sound like second-rate Venom imitators (see the title cut -- although, to be fair, "Protector" did rage with a singular intensity), and though he would survive Dolan's almost inevitable return (simply acting as bassist) a year later, the band never did recover its original momentum.
