Dentro de la distinguida y ecléctica familia new wave de comienzos de los 80, Echo & The Bunnymen ha destacado siempre por su especial personalidad, muy diferente a las de The Cure, U2, Simple Minds o Psychedelic Furs. Una singularidad debida en parte a la voz de su carimático vocalista-crooner, Ian McCulloch. Tras unos primeros álbumes bastante oscuros, los Bunnymen asumirían gradualmente su gusto por las bellas melodías y las instrumentaciones exuberantes. Pero Ocean Rain se impone hoy como uno de sus mejores discos y como meta de ese periodo de transformación. A lo largo de este cuarto disco editado en la primavera de 1984, el rock etéreo de este otro gran cuarteto de Liverpool se demuestra heredero tanto de la grandilocuente parsimonia del genial Scott Walker como del lirismo de los Doors o los Byrds, e incluso de los angustiosos sonidos de Joy Divison… Gracias a su detallista producción y a sus sedosos arreglos, el talento compositivo de McCulloch y el impresionismo guitarrero de Will Sergeant brillaban como nunca hasta entonces.
