Recorded live in 2018 in Würzburg, Germany, this best-selling recital by pianist Jan Lisiecki offers "Night Music" of various kinds. The album seems oriented toward English-speaking listeners in that Mozart's 12 Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman," K. 265, is presented as a piece of night music, presumably because in English this melody is known as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. (The French title simply means "Ah, I will tell you, Mother.") The rest of the pieces, by Schumann, Ravel, and Paderewski, are indeed classics of the night music genre, with Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, the crown jewel of the 20th century virtuoso piano repertory, placed as the climactic event in Lisiecki's able reading. It's hard to know what Deutsche Grammophon thought it was trying to accomplish with this release. It's a bit skimpy at 59 minutes, especially considering that the original 2018 recital contained pieces not heard here. Perhaps it was meant as a teaser for the video release of the concert, which may make sense; Lisiecki is a charismatic figure who draws in young listeners. Or perhaps it resulted from a pandemic-era shortage of new product. On its own, however, the album seems unambitious. There is indeed nothing particularly nocturnal about the Mozart work, and the program as a whole lacks freshness. There is no question that Lisiecki can handle the challenges of Scarbo cleanly, but he has a lot of company these days. The closest thing to a novelty on the program is the final Nocturne in B flat major from the Miscellanea, Op. 16, and Lisiecki gives it a suitably nostalgic treatment in a nod to his Polish heritage. Yet even this is missing live-performance spontaneity, and the live sound is not up to DG's usual standards; Lisiecki's piano sounds harsh, especially in the Mozart. Clearly, this young pianist, a star in his early teens, has much to offer, but this release does not seem to have been chosen for maximum impact.
