German tenor Daniel Behle is making recordings for Sony of the Mozartian roles that he has been able to perform on stage. This project is similar to the one recently brought out on deutsche harmonia mundi, in which Behle and the Orfeo Barockorchester conducted by Michi Gaigg put together a fine collection of aria and overtures by Schubert. For Mozart, our soloist first dons the costume of Don Ottavio, the fiancé of Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), and then that of Belmonte (Cosi fan tutte) and of Tamino (The Magic Flute), finishing with the crown of Idomeneo, the king of Crete. It's one hell of a career arc, as suggested by the album's title, Zero to Hero. The Orfeo Barockorchester takes wing to avenge ill-treated heroines in the overture to Don Giovanni, with a sense for contrast that grips immediately. A most successful captatio banavolentiae. With its period instruments and its baroque DNA, the whole work lends Mozart a welcome suppleness, and, despite a rather metallic sound quality, the lightness of the performance fits both the recital format and Behle's voice, which is now marvellously delicate (Tamino) and now amply majestic but still agile (Idomeneo).
Fans of the tenor and his slick interpretations of the classical repertoire will be delighted by this programme, which follows Mozart's career: chaotic, because offering tribute to his protectors, but bending towards success – precarious success, the price of freedom in a time when a composer was still very much a courtesan. © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz
