Con una duración de más de dos horas, Mellon Collie supone un auténtico reto. Dicho sea en honor de Billy Corgan, se trata de un trabajo gratificante y convincente. Aunque el alcance del álbum sea inmenso, los Smashing Pumpkins brillan en tan rimbombante marco. La composición de Corgan nunca se ha limitado a la idea convencional de lo que puede hacer una banda de rock, incluso aunque quede clara su inspiración en los trabajos de los grupos de heavy metal y art rock de los 70. En vez de copiar los sonidos de sus discos predilectos, amplía sus ideas y logra que el suave piano del tema que da título al disco y el suspirante "1979" se acomoden sin problemas con el torrente explosivo de "Jellybelly" y "Zero". En medio de estos dos extremos hay todo un despliegue de estilos musicales que abarcan rock, pop, folk y música clásica.
