When Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink remade the Labelle classic "Lady Marmalade" with Missy Misdemeanor Elliott at the helm, the result was surprisingly successful. The four stars blended their talents together perfectly, and the song, based on airplay alone, topped the U.S. pop charts for five weeks during the summer of 2001. The song was from the film Moulin Rouge, and its video, featuring the four scantily clad vixens, was as colorful and vibrant as the film itself, no doubt adding to the song's success. With rock guitars, dance beats, and a playful (albeit highly materialistic) rap courtesy of Lil' Kim (which in turn added a more modern twist to the song), the blend possessed all the necessary ingredients to become one of 2001's biggest international hits. In the U.S., however, no commercial single was released for the song, which, in this case, didn't impede its chart success. Arguably the best import single for this tune is the German import (the British contains only three tracks), which includes the radio version as well as three unstoppable dance remixes (one being a single edit) courtesy of Thunderpuss, one of the hottest remixing teams of the late '90s/early '00s. Especially fun is the song's finale, where Elliott briefly introduces each of the four artists, and each gal vamps it up in her signature style. A huge summertime hit, and the first U.S. chart-topper for Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink (Christina Aguilera had already scored three).
