With his gorgeous voice and graceful phrasing, which managed to convey both arrogance and fragile innocence by turns, coupled with his charismatic good looks, Marvin Gaye was Motown's first pure pop star. A gifted writer, as well as a competent pianist and drummer, his pop jazz masterpiece of social commentary What's Going On changed the face of pop music when it was released in 1971. This collection features live versions of some of his hits. While pleasant, it hardly qualifies as an essential purchase.
