Para distinguir Greatest Hits de otras recopilaciones de The Cure que han salido al mercado, hay que señalar que la mayor parte de los elementos agoreros del grupo están ausentes de este disco, debido a la exclusión de gran parte del material de sus inicios. El grueso de este disco está dedicado a los clásicos de The Cure en su época intermedia, como "Let's Go to Bed", una pieza que suena a la vez cándida y ardiente, "Close to Me", una pieza dominada por los instrumentos de viento que son de las que dejan sin resuello, y "The Lovecats", otra pieza con aires de jazz muy movida. Y para demostrar que The Cure no se fue apagando tras la era Reagan, Greatest hits recuerda a los oyentes la joya del pop "Friday I'm in Love", que es efervescente y trascendente a la vez, y la pieza de rock duro "Never Enough", dos canciones que están a la altura de los primeros trabajos del grupo. También hay aquí un par de canciones nuevas muy atractivas para beneficio de quienes ya tengan todas las demás piezas aquí incluidas.
