Extra Presence is an expanded edition of Actual Presence, a limited album put out by Carlos Niño himself in 2020. Like every other release in the Carlos Niño & Friends series, Extra Presence is a "Spiritual, Improvisational, Space Collage" stringing together moments from some of the collective's numerous recording sessions, overdubbing them with additional sounds and rhythms as necessary. This one particularly centers around a 2019 gig with Devin Daniels, Jamael Dean, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Randy Gloss in which Niño determined that his concerts are sonic journeys rather than typical sets of songs. There aren't really any specific narratives to these journeys, they're all about going with the flow and feeling as much as possible within each moment. The rumbling free jazz of "Explorations 7" gives way to the laid-back shuffle and trickling pianos of "Actually," a calm reverie after a period of anxious turbulence. Sam Gendel contributes otherworldly, Jon Hassell-like textures to "for the Shapalaceer," which also features Nate Mercereau's fluid, forlorn guitar in the background. "WaterWavesArrival" is a stunning rush of harp-like guitar plucks and floating synths by Jesse Peterson, eventually arriving at a vast, welcoming seashore. Much of the extra content consists of reworked pieces from the main album. Peterson returns to contribute koto and synth to a remake of the kalimba-based "Youwillgetthroughthis, I promise" (originally featuring Jamael Dean), and Shabazz Palaces adds a guest rap to the eerie, beat-driven "Dreamsishappening." Laraaji's zither appears somewhere during "AmazonianPulse," but it's hard to detect through the bubbling water sounds and percussive drift; Mercereau's fluttering guitar during the second half makes much more of an impression. "Mushroomeclipse," a collaboration with new age godfather Iasos, is expanded into the 23-minute "Recurrent Reiki Dreams," which concludes the album. The extended piece is ideal for clearing one's mind, and leaves the greatest impression of the entire 90-minute trip.
