Following his previous album "Baritenor", which was already considered off the beaten track, Michael Spyres continues his exploration of different vocal writing styles intended for the male voice, and here we find a repertoire that is still far too little known: it features tenors from the baroque era. We often tend to think that the castrati were the only stars of the 18th century. However, certain "tenori assoluti" could also give claim to the title of "divos” and competed for notoriety by proving their own virtuoso capabilities and offering a symbiosis of virility and gentleness that succeeded in seducing contemporary audiences. Their vocal range was also exceptional, sometimes reaching three and a half octaves (covering the range between the male bass and the female contralto). Today, Michael Spyres is one of the rare singers able to interpret these arias which push the human voice to the limits of its capabilities. From French counter-tenor to Italian baritone tenor, from lyrical tragedy to opera seria, his selection succeeds in highlighting his exceptional voice, as much in its suppleness, range, and tone, as in its elegance of style and pronunciation perfection. As an accompaniment, Francesco Corti directs the Il Pomo d'Oro ensemble. Here we find some of the most famous 17th- and 18th-century composers of the Baroque and Classical eras, such as Lully (Persée), Rameau (Naïs), Handel and his moving Bajazet by Tamerlano, Vivaldi (Artabano), the young Mozart (Mitridate) and of course the inevitable "I lost my Eurydice" from Orpheus and Gluck's Eurydice. Alongside Leonardo Vinci (Catone in Utica) and Nicola Porpora (an impressive excerpt from Germanico in Germania), there are also other lesser-known names such as Domenico Sarro (1679–1744) and Antonio Maria Mazzoni (1717–1785). Some pieces have even had their world's first ever recordings here: a piece by Arminio Johann Adolf Hasse and unpublished virtuoso arias by Baldassare Galuppi and Gaetano Latilla. © Julia Le Brun/Qobuz
