A sus 73 años, Rod the Mod merecería tener un museo íntegramente dedicado. Con un Grammy Award, dos veces presente en el Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame y más de 200 millones de álbumes y singles vendidos, al escocés no le queda nada por gana. Pero en su álbum número 30 ha querido hacer algo diferente. Coproducido por Kevin Savigar, con el que trabaja desde la década de los 80, Blood Red Roses encadena una sorpresa tras otra. Lejos de discos como Maggie May y Handbags & Gladrags, ha apostado ahora por el pop más aéreo. En Look In Her Eyes Stewart incluso deja de lado su voz cascada y recurre a efectos de eco. Tan enérgico como siempre, no es difícil imaginar su contoneo sexy en Hole In My Heart, y como compositor de temas excitantes está que se sale, por ejemplo, en Farewell. Por lo demás, pese a que el disco en conjunto suena decididamente contemporáneo, los violines escoceses de la canción que da título al trabajo consiguen sacar a la luz su expresividad más profunda. Pero también hay espacio para las sonoridades reggae (I Don’t Want To Get Married) o para versionear un hit de Ervin Drake, It Was A Very Good Year.
