This is one of Guido Cantelli's last studio recordings, a few months before the plane crash that claimed his life in 1956. Hired by Walter Legge for a whole series of recordings for His Master's Voice, the young Italian conductor was beginning a brilliant career, just like his young colleagues Carlo Maria Giulini and Herbert von Karajan who were lucky enough to live and conduct into their older years.
Recorded in London at Abbey Road Studios, this magnificent record symbolises youth and genius in three ways. Mendelssohn was 21 years old when he composed his "Italian" Symphony and Schubert was 25 when he left the first two movements of a symphony that will always remain unfinished. Here they are conducted by a 35-year-old conductor in elegant, supple and poetic versions. All three men would die in their youth, between thirty-one and thirty-eight years old.
These three tragic destinies were destined to meet in this luminous record where the music speaks for itself, with a mysterious mix of joy and melancholy. © François Hudry/Qobuz
