Jon Batiste Salutes His Idol
Listen to Jon Batiste's live performance at one of the most famous NYC jazz venues!
Between October 30th and November 4th 2018, The Village Vanguard hosted jazz pianist Jon Batiste, along with his orchestra: Joe Saylor behind the kit, Phil Kuehn on bass, Tivon Pennicott, Patrick Bartley, Jon Lampley and Giveton Gelin on horn duty, as well as the star guest, singer Rachael Price (on The Very Thought Of You). Batiste has always shown similarities to Thelonious Monk, sharing that same way of threading a needle through chaos and passing tones with childlike joy. Given that perspective, it only makes that he would specifically mention the legendary pianist before taking on Round Midnight, one of Monk’s most famous standards. 3 of Batiste’s own songs are also featured on the 5-song set: Creative, from Jazz Is Now (2013), Dusk Train To Doha, never published until today, and Anatomy of Angels, the title track. Batiste’s reputation is solid enough as it is – lately, he’s been directing the Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s jazz orchestra, averaging around 3 million viewers per night. The Village Vanguard, by contrast, seats around 120 – expect an intimate performance. The New Yorker’s playing often spirals into meditative eddies that resolve themselves in inexplicable ways. His melodious storytelling is highlighted by the strength of the backing band; all in all it makes for a very solid, albeit short performance. Here’s to hoping those 5 other nights get published as well! © Alexis Renaudat/Qobuz
