Muscle Shoals is in Alabama, not Texas, but Texas still made the pilgrimage to this Mecca of soul music. More precisely, to the legendary FAME studios, which have been graced by the likes of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Arthur Conley, Irma Thomas, Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Lou Rawls, Candi Staton, and Bobbie Gentry, among others. With the aptly-titled The Muscle Shoals Sessions, Sharleen Spiteri and her collaborators embark on a very “southern soul” reinterpretation of their most beloved songs. Not only did they record these highly impactful reworks in Alabama, but they also invited a living legend of the genre to this gospel fiesta: Spooner Oldham, who’s played not only for Otis and Artetha, but also for Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and hundreds of others. The American pianist in his eighties sat alongside the charismatic Scot to lay down a few chords of pure groove with the humility we’ve come to expect of him. On the hit-like “I Don’t Want A Lover” and “Say What You Mean,” the result is rather convincing. On these tracks, Spiteri also reminds whoever may have forgotten that she is, first and foremost, a soul singer, and an ultra soulful one at that. Also worth noting are the two great covers included over the course of this spiritual feast: Charles & Eddie’s “Would I Lie to You?” and The Drifters’ “Save The Last Dance For Me.” © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
