Taj Mahal, born Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr. in Harlem, New York, adopted his stage name as a student at the University of Massachusetts. In his early twenties Mahal headed west, where he'd meet guitarist Ry Cooder, with whom he'd form the Rising Sons and, nearly 60 years later, release the collaborative album, Get On Board. In between, Taj Mahal released dozens and dozens of studio and live albums, won three Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, among other accolades.
