About Playlist

With over a hundred roles and almost 50 operas to her name, Renata Scotto is the soprano to end all sopranos. Born in Savona, Italy, in 1934, she found her vocation as a singer when she attended a performance of Verdi's Rigoletto with Tito Gobbi in the leading role. She began to study singing in Milan, before being taken under the wing of the soprano Mercedes Llopart, who made her aware of her true range (Scotto had thought she was a mezzo until then). Her first success came in 1953 when she shared the stage with Renata Tebaldi in Alfredo Catalani's La Wally. Her real breakthrough came 4 years later, at the 1957 Edinburgh Festival, when she replaced La Callas at short notice in a production of Bellini's La Sonnambula. She was only 23 at the time. From then on, she went on tour and appeared in a string of international productions: La Bohème, Rigoletto, La Clémence de Titus, Norma, Manon Lescaut, etc. In an impressive feat of endurance, she managed to hold certain roles for more than two decades (Gilda in Rigoletto, or Lucia di Lamermoor in the work of the same name). Her name is engraved in gold letters on the frontispieces of works which her unassailable performances have claimed: we think in particular of her deeply moving renditions of Cio-Cio San in Madame Butterfly, Manon Lescaut and Suor Angelica. A protean artist, she began directing in 1986 with an acclaimed production of Madame Butterfly, and from the 1980s onwards explored roles from the twentieth-century repertoire: Elektra, La Voix Humaine, Erwartung, and more. At the dawn of the 1990s, she put an end to her stage career to devote herself to teaching and training the next generation of singers, counting among her pupils future divas such as Renée Fleming and Anna Netrebko. This talent and teacher, endearingly nicknamed "Scottine" by her fans, died in August 2023 at the age of 89. Photo © Jack Mitchell/Getty Images
