About Playlist
The life and career of Otis Redding was cut short in December, 1967, by a plane crash that took his life—at age 26—along with most members of his backing band, The Bar-Kays. In just five years Redding established himself as one of the greatest singers of all time, the history of music forever enriched by a voice that took control of every song (every note!) he sang and gave it everything he had. "I'm pretty sure I'd just seen God on stage," said Grateful Dead's Bob Weir about Redding's legendary 5-song set at the Monterey Pop Festival in June, 1967.
Our Otis Redding Roots & Heritage playlist starts with his first single, "These Arms of Mine" (Stax, 1962) and progresses through his hits and deep cuts, influences, contemporaries, successors and inspired covers of his catalog.
