About Playlist
Though she began as a lover and singer of classic country, adept at animating both its powerful sadness and its overwhelming joy, Neko Case has steadily become a highly distinct accomplished art songstress and composer of musical tour de force recordings. As a prodigious songwriter Case has simultaneously maintained her connection to traditional American music and classic country (has anyone ever covered Loretta Lynn better?) while evolving into an expert writer of imaginative soundscapes full of drama that beautifully showcase her lusty, redolent soloist's contralto that she's not shy about projecting but can also dial back into a vulnerable smokiness. Having absorbed elemental lessons from classic country, she's fearsome and indomitable one minute and dolefully self-defeating the next—in both modes always elegant and insightful. Preferring acoustic guitars to electric, and spare drum parts to anything more bombastic, Case's voice, often double tracked, is rightly the center of all she does. Aided no doubt by her good taste in backing bands, she has meshed exceedingly well with both the Southwest desert rock vibe of Calexico and the more twangy universe of The Sadies, both of which appear on a number of her recordings. As a key member of The New Pornographers and also in her work with Laura Veirs and k.d. lang she's also shown herself to be an engaged collaborator.
