Today, living legend Buddy Guy turns 80 …

Real giants of the blues are, sadly, getting rarer and rarer nowadays. Thankfully, Buddy Guy is not only still among us, but still going strong and celebrating his 80th birthday today! The octogenarian from Louisiana, born 30th July 1936, is one of the most famous blues guitarists of all time. A real game-changer who influenced generations of young guitar players, from Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keith Richards, or Mark Knopfler to name but a few. He inspired the fusion of traditional Chicago Blues grooves with the energy of rock’n’roll and its stagemanship. So to celebrate this day, we’re paying tribute to this living legend through a few videos. The first of which is taken from a concert in 1969, where a young Buddy plays alongside Jack Bruce and Buddy Miles:

The next year, Buddy Guy was filmed by filmmaker Harley Cokeliss for the documentary Chicago Blues:

Here's Buddy rocking out and having the time of his life at the 1994 Newport Jazz Festival. "I wish I had another hour and a half" he says, so do we!

Finally, in 2016, Buddy Guy plays on the most important stage of all, at the White House.
