Marika Hackman is more than yet another English folk singer

Pretty young folk singer no.8536 or a genuine talent? Whilst Marika Hackman could be broadly described by the first category, with We Slept At Last she has released a stunning debut album which brings to mind some of Beth Orton's first efforts. Certain facts about her background may lead some to presume she's another forgettable face on the folk-pop assembly line - her education at Bedales, one of the UK's most expensive private schools; her fleeting modelling career with Burberry; her friendships with supermodel Cara Delvigne and Laura Marling - but this 23-year-old has proved herself to be the real deal with her singular and arresting talent. We Slept At Last comes from a fantasy world of ancient hills and woodlands filled with intriguing characters, ethereal like her vocals and permeated with a beautiful melancholy. Whilst the instrumentation remains acoustic for the most part, hints of electro and new wave sneak in. With a record like this, Marika Hackman has made it clear that she is here to stay.
