The secret to successful love matches and musical collaborations is timing. Fourteen years ago Sam Beam, otherwise known by his nom de musique Iron & Wine, and Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino collaborated on the EP, In the Reins, in which Beam wrote all the tunes and Calexico played backing band. With families, careers and musical identities now established, these two musical forces have reunited, and the pairing of Beam's solid indie folk songwriting and Calexico's atmospheric soundscapes and jazz-like improvisation has fulfilled the promise that the earlier EP implied.

Recorded in Nashville with a minimum of rehearsal or overdubs with engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell), Years to Burn—in which Beam still has most of the songwriting credits—has good sonics and a wonderful loose, spontaneous flow. Nowhere is that more apparent than in "The Bitter Suite," a three-part, eight-minute exploration that starts slow in "Pajaro" with Spanish language vocals by trumpeter Jacob Valenzuela before "Evil Eye" ups the tempo with peppy, wordless vocals and horn before an accordion joins for a solemn coda, "Tennessee Train."

The notion of sweet 'n' sour continues as two of the strongest songs prominently feature tears in the lyrics. The opener "What Heaven's Left" which begins with "You take these tears off my face," and features Paul Niehaus on pedal steel, feels like a 70's country outlaw production. The title track, which opens with Convertino using brushes on a snare, centers musically on Valenzuela's gorgeously restrained horn work and a spot-on duet between Beam and Burns who invest in the evocative lyrical punchline, "Our tears hold the light in our eyes." Beam's "Father Mountain,"—yet another example of his deep artistic debt to Neil Young—is the melodic, near-pop side of his songwriting at its best and his closer, "In Your Own Time" has a familiar, sing-along quality. A satisfying ideal of creative energies aligned. © Robert Baird / Qobuz
