The King's Singers have recorded children's music in the past (Kids' Stuff, 1986), and the absolute distinctiveness of their sound is perhaps something that would appeal to many kids. Despite the cartoon graphics, however, 2023's Wonderland is not really another children's album, even if the album title and some of the texts in the main work, György Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals, take Lewis Carroll as an inspiration. The performers put it this way: "With endless information at our fingertips, we want to help our listeners to suspend disbelief and enter a magical universe for just a few minutes. This isn't just for kids, but for all of us." The six Nonsense Madrigals are the centerpiece, divided up and interspersed with other works. They are full of unexpected twists, often quite funny, but also technically difficult, and they are at their best when sung by really top-notch vocalists like those of the durable King's Singers. For the rest of the program, the singers do well at picking material that has a playful but not light quality; sample Judith Bingham's Tricksters. The music here is more contemporary than that on most King's Singers albums, but it is, without exception, accessible. Signum contributes impressive sound from the Britten Studio in Snape Maltings. This seems likely to become a gift-giving favorite for the 2023 holiday season and beyond.
