The excellent ragtime and classic jazz pianist Sue Keller emphasizes the blues on this CD. The 16 selections are taken more or less in chronological order dating from 1912's "Dallas Blues" to James P. Johnson's 1927 romp "Snowy Morning Blues." Keller sings on all but three songs, displaying a forceful and expressive voice. However, it is her piano playing that is of greatest interest, for she is quite fluent, strides hard, and is often quite powerful; her boogie bass is memorable. Not all of the songs are technically blues (certainly not Zez Confrey's "Kitten on the Keys"), although most are, and Keller's treatment of the material is consistently bluesy. Fans of vintage jazz piano styles and spirited blues singing will enjoy this set.
