There's something nostalgic and familiar about the songs on Band of Horses' sixth album, Things Are Great. More than once it feels like you're listening to some lost John Hughes soundtrack cut. "Lights" is big and buoyant as singer Ben Bridwell describes a dumb teenage mis-adventure that gets busted by the cops, all set to a Psychedelic Furs-sounding guitar. Single "Crutch" combines a Johnny Marr guitar tone with Echo and the Bunnymen-style synth, not to mention a clever chorus lyric: "I got a crutch on you/ Just sick of needing something to do." Band leader Bridwell has said of that line, "Obviously 'crutch' means some of the things that I was dependent on. My relationship for one. I think I wanted to say, 'I've got a crush on you,' and I thought it was funny how relationships also feel like crutches. I feel like everybody has had a time when nothing goes right and you still have to carry on." There's audio cleverness, too. "Tragedy of the Commons," which starts off bouncing along amiably but slows to a lazy-day crawl as Bridwell sings "Just lying like dogs/ Laying in the sunshine"—then, ever so slyly, pulls the same trick for the line "The clatter of the ever-warring classes." The song nearly fades away to nothing midway through, then lolls back to life. "Warning Signs" is delightfully spacey, almost like a nod to the band's former producer, Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle. "In The Hard Times" is a slow, drawn-out swagger, its guitar the kind of laid-back country blues you usually find in a Chris Stapleton song. "In Need of Repair" is a shuffle that bursts into early '90s college-rock sunshine, and "Ice Night We're Having" feels positively giddy. Closer "Coalinga" stands tall as a cinemascape of grandiosity and simplicity, with its plunking keys and strings and gloriously big choruses—a fantastically romantic setting for "a cow-shit-smelling hellhole called Coalinga." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
