Long before he was a superstar celebrity DJ (he even competed against Heidi Fleiss, Ivana Trump, and Sisqó on the U.K. television series Celebrity Big Brother) to rival a hitmaker like Cascada, Jonas Erik Altberg truly lived up to his name of Basshunter. This 2013 set collects 2006's The Old Shit (already a set of archival recordings) and 2004's The Bassmachine, both of them mostly instrumental albums with the pounding and the fury of that pre-EDM style of stadium techno that they used to call "jumpstyle." In other words, huge beats, simple and bright riffs, and woofer-ruining bass are what you'll find here, most of it at a prime-time club tempo, meant to fill the floor and put hands in the air. Disc one is the minimal monster of the bunch with tracks like "Bass Worker," "Moon Trip," and "The Bass Machine" all going for the gusto with an extra slice of futuristic cheese, but the fellatiotic "Go Down Now" wins for its dominatrix-cold, oral-sex-talk-plus-a-hook that provides guilty pleasures overflowing. Disc two is where the sunshine starts to come in with trance-influenced melodies carrying "The True Sound," "Train Station," and "Trance Up" to highlight status, all while predicting the coming of the genre blend called EDM. In the end, this is a set for loyal fans since the albums barely even go together stylistically, and while you can't say this early techno fluff is uninspired or flat, Basshunter didn't find his true voice until he allowed much more pop into his life. Still, these two albums are hard to acquire on their own, meaning The Early Bedroom Sessions serves a practical purpose for the Basshunter faithful.
