Franco d'Andrea's seventh volume of solo piano for Philology focuses on Italian compositions associated with Naples. Many of the melodies within this CD may be unfamiliar to jazz fans with the exception of "O' Sole Mio," though it is radically transformed in d'Andrea's capable hands. "Reginella" seems to briefly detour into "The Sheik of Araby," the American pop song from the 1920s. The liner notes don't explain if the rest of the music are also Italian popular songs (though that seems to be the case), but d'Andrea holds one's interest throughout this hour-long studio effort, taped over three sessions in April 2001. Because it's hard to judge improvisations when one hasn't heard the original works, this release ranks just a notch below the other seven volumes, but the adventurous improvisations which these tunes inspired will fascinate any fan of d'Andrea.
