Some people will be surprised by the title of this album, Music for Violin I, because Schubert's works for this instrument are not well known. Most surprising of all in fact is that this body of work will stretch to another, as-yet-unreleased, volume. The Rondo in A Major (later orchestrated), the Konzertstück in D Major, the Polonaise in B Flat Majorand the Sonata in G Minor are youthful works written in 1816 and 1817, after Schubert left the Konvikt, a veritable "prison" which stifled his verve and his desire to perform freely. This severe, austere school did however give him a high-quality education and allowed him not only to compose, but also to play violin in the student orchestra, to conduct, and, above all, the hear his own compositions, a privilege which fate would deny him in adult life.

1816 was an extremely productive year, in which he would write, amongst other things, his Third, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, and his First Sonata for piano, D.105, and more than 200 lieder. The works for violin weren't written in the same ink. Probably written for himself or for his older brother Ferdinand, these are joyful, unpretentious works probably written for a private audience.

They are nothing like the Fantasia in C Major D. 934 of 1827 whose length so irritated its first performers that the ambitious work was relegated to relative obscurity. As he was wonted to do, Schubert structured a whole movement (the third) as variations on a theme based on one of this lieder, 1822's Sei mir gergrüsst. The period instruments played here by Ariadne Daskalakis and Paolo Giacometti give a particular flavour to these scores which have for too long languished in the shadows. © François Hudry/Qobuz
