Three Cantors after Johann Hermann Schein, two Cantors before Bach, Johann Schelle (1648-1701) held the very prestigious Leipzig job from 1677 to his death. Schelle studied under the wing of another famous "Sch" (Schütz, Schein, Scheidt) of the German baroque, Schütz, before embarking upon his musical career: in Leipzig he created German-language works that mingled Gospel texts with spiritual Lieder, and he was also one of the first authors to write chorale cantatas. He gave the world around 200 pieces in all, of which sadly only about 50 survive to the present day. But what we do have is dazzling enough to support as excellent an album as this one from CPO.
Here we have several chorale cantatas, starting with isolated movements including the impressive Vom Himmel kam der Engel Schar, written for five soloists for a five-voice choir, the singers themselves matching a "choir" of five string instruments and a further five brass pieces – rounded off with timbales and trumpets: just imagine the richness of the sound! The album continues with the ample Actus Musicus auf Weyh-Nachten, which would be a real Christmas oratorio, although Schelle did introduce, alongside some words from the Gospel, a few pieces by Luther, including the famous Vom Himmel hoch, da komme ich her whose lyrics the listener might recognise, as the music would be taken up and altered many times over by Bach in later decades. It seems that Actus Musicus auf Weyh-Nachten was performed for the first time in 1683: in Leipzig, of course. Choir, soloists and orchestra unfurl a great pastoral tapestry and a great instrumental and harmonic richness, alternating between instrumental sonatas, ariosos, recitations and choirs.
