Dispatch was one of the most influential indie-rock bands of the 90s, known for their unique blend of rock, folk, and reggae music, socially conscious lyrics, and activism efforts. In 2019, founding member Pete Francis left the band to focus on his mental health struggles after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 31. As a means of self-soothing, Francis returned to his love of making music with a childlike curiosity, which can be heard throughout his first solo album since leaving Dispatch, PTRN SKY.
PTRN SKY marks a significant departure from Francis' previous work, both as a solo artist and as a member of Dispatch. The album features a clear tendency towards more electronic and synthesized elements, creating a more modern and dynamic sound. This experimentation with new sounds and techniques is a testament to Francis' growth as an artist and his willingness to push the boundaries of his craft. Yet despite the departure from his previous work, PTRN SKY still contains the elements that made Francis a beloved musician in the first place. Throughout the album, you can hear the influences of his childhood favourite artists like David Bowie and Pink Floyd, yet everything he writes still seems to have that 90’s indie-rock tinge to it. The album has a positive outlook and serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and light to be found.
The fragility in Francis' vocals and the honesty in his lyrics are particularly striking on tracks like "All Your Tears," "Fall Into Your Heart," and "Brighter Days." The latter track is a standout moment on the album, with Francis repeating the words "I won't give up / No I won't give up." The song serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. PTRN SKY is a deeply personal album that showcases Pete Francis' growth and evolution as an artist. It is clear that he has poured his heart and soul into this project, and the result is a beautiful and moving collection of songs. As listeners, we are grateful to share in Francis' journey and to be a part of this new chapter in his life. © Jessica Porter-Langson / Qobuz
