For the 2023 big-screen, live-action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid, original composer Alan Menken joined forces with none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda for four new songs and some additions to existing material by Menken and 1989 lyricist Howard Ashman. Highlights of the reworked soundtrack remain such classics as the ballad "Part of Your World," the sweet "Kiss the Girl," and the Academy Award-winner "Under the Sea," all delivered by a stellar cast led here by the flawless Halle Bailey (Ariel). A standout among the new songs is "Wild Uncharted Waters," which could be thought of as a "Part of Your World" for Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) that he launches into after being rescued from a shipwreck by the mermaid. There and elsewhere, Miranda does his best to blend in with an all-timer and idol in Ashman, and only "The Scuttlebutt" -- spoke-sung by Awkwafina with Daveed Diggs -- is a conspicuously verbose Miranda-styled outing, with steel drums and other percussion framing it in Disney's established fairy tale world. New score material by Menken is also included on the album, which clocks in at 40 minutes -- three minutes shorter than the 1989 soundtrack, with the score and songs including "Daughters of Triton" and René Auberjonois' "Les Poissons" swapped out.
