What is "new" about this Requiem Novum from composer Mårten Jansson? Its very existence, for one thing; it is crossover music and a requiem mass, two genres that have perhaps never before been put together. For another, each movement of the Latin mass is followed by a setting for soprano and orchestra of an English-language poem by Charles Anthony Silvestri. The text does not simply reflect that of the mass but responds to it, suggesting renewed hope the mass observance has brought. This is indubitably crossover music, entirely tonal and melodically oriented, and as such, it represents something new for the Voces8 choir and its director Barnaby Smith, also leading the Philharmonia Orchestra. There is even a "radio edit" of the Sanctus included at the end, stripping out the soprano part of the original movement lest it sound too "classical." Where she does appear, soprano Anna Dennis cultivates a smooth, featureless tone. Fans of Karl Jenkins will enjoy the music here, and one's reception of the music will depend to a degree on one's attitude toward the larger style, but anyone may perceive that the composition is nicely wrought. Jansson's mass movements are varied and effectively cinematic; sample the tumultuous Dies irae for an idea. The relationship between the Latin sections and the English responses is novel. Silvestri is a professor of medieval history who has made an interesting side project out of furnishing texts for choral works; he has also collaborated with Eric Whitacre, whose fans might also check this out. This state-of-the-art crossover release landed on classical best-seller lists in April of 2022.
