If Ives’ glorious masterpiece Three Places in New England has been recorded quite a few times in the past, by some well-known names – Tilson Thomas, Dohnanyi, Howard Hanson pour l’une des plus anciennes, Andrew Davis, Ormandy, Andrew Litton, David Zinman – the case is quite different as regards the Orchestral set n° 2 – Dohnanyi and Davis, that’s about all –, as well as for the Symphony New England Holidays, even though the latter boasts recordings y Bernstein and Tilson Thomas. Too bad for these last two works, who are worthy of a much more visible concert life. Of course, it’s true that the New England Holidays Symphony seems a rather curious medley of four movements that might look somewhat unrelated. The first, Washington’s Birthday, is written for a small chamber orchestra, the second Decoration Day calls for a regular symphony orchestra, the third Fourth of July uses up three separate ensembles among which a percussion band, and finally Thanksgiving and /or Forefathers Day calls for a XXL philharmonic with chorus and organ. This new recording, combining all three works, is a welcome addition to Ives’ discography; the Seattle Symphony Orchestra is conducted by its principal conductor Ludovic Morlot. © SM/Qobuz
