Featuring a cast of significant indie rock figures that includes My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields and Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, French singer-songwriter Charlotte Marionneau's debut album as Le Volume Courbe (The Volume Curve) is an often surreal blend of post-modern production techniques and Marionneau's idiosyncratic lyrics and vocals. She sings in a pre-pubescent whisper, to naïve, lo-fi musical accompaniment, and her eccentric English and the album's experimental tendencies ensure she maintains her listeners' attention. Her cover of Nina Simone's "Ain't Got No... I Got Life" will either give Simone fans a frisson of recognition, or conniptions.
