Some eight years after the record-shattering "Cruise (Remix)," Nelly decided to cash in on his appearance on the Florida Georgia Line blockbuster by releasing Heartland, a collection designed to emphasize his country roots -- or at least to give him some crossover play on a variety of playlists. Assisting Nelly in his genre bending are a long list of guest stars, chief among them Florida Georgia Line, who conjure some "Cruise" vibes on "Lil Bit." FGL's Tyler Hubbard also duets with Nelly on "Country Boy Do," another blissed-out party tune in a short album filled with them. Kane Brown also stops by for the not-gritty-at-all "Grits & Glamour," Blanco Brown gets up for "High Horse," Darius Rucker sings part of the chorus on "Ms. Drive Me Crazy," George Birge helps the rapper get mellow on "Someone Somewhere," while Jimmie Allen brings things in for a smooth close on "Good Times Roll." Nelly only does one song on this brief album on his own -- "Five Drinks Ago" -- a decision that winds up underscoring how he seems to fade into the background on Heartland. Nevertheless, the mini-album does precisely what it intended to do: it's a chill time, perfect for pop, country, or hip-hop playlists or anything in between.
