The German choir conductor Frieder Bernius has a great number of recordings to his name. These range from Schutz’s Symphoniae Sacrae to Haydn’s Stabat Mater, as well as numerous discoveries concerning the works of Jan Dismas Zelenka. In 1984, Frieder Bernius had already recorded the rare oratorio version of Joseph Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ in Stuttgart. Edited in 2006 by Hänssler, the piece featured excellent soloists. Now, almost forty years after Bernius’ original recording, Hänssler is offering a new version of this famous work on his current label, Carus.
It's common knowledge that Haydn was very fond of this work. It was commissioned around 1785, by a canon of Cadiz, for the purpose of being performed during a Good Friday service. Consisting of eight slow, meditative movements that culminate in a striking terremoto ("earthquake"), this singular work was originally intended to be performed by an orchestra. Haydn created an arrangement for a string quartet, which he followed with a piano transcription, leading to his penning of a final revival in the form of an oratorio—with a set of texts revised by Baron Gottfried Van Swieten.
This most recent version is the least well known, undoubtedly overshadowed by masterpieces such as The Creation (Die Schopfung) and The Seasons (Die Jahrezeiten). This new version, by Frieder Bernius, was recorded in March 2021 at the Stadthalle in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart. It inspires introspection, creating an atmosphere of both naïve and sincere faith that aligns perfectly with Haydn’s spirit. © François Hudry/Qobuz
