The longevity of Mary J. Blige’s career is nothing short of incredible, especially for a female artist in a musical genre where youth reigns supreme. Two days before her performance at Super Bowl 2022 alongside Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Eminem, the 51-year-old singer released her fourteenth album, Good Morning Gorgeous, to remind us that her status as music royalty is more than well-deserved. After all, she’s a huge name in RnB, rap and beyond. Being the best of the best, her album is peppered with today’s top artists. There’s Anderson Paak on the excellent track Here With Me, Fivio Foreign (a Brooklyn Drill artist) on On Top, and Usher on Need Love. As for production, Good Morning Gorgeous is a behemoth that draws its influences from dancehall as well as the darkest of trap music. The title track, which appears to be some kind of mantra following her public divorce, has an undeniably soul sound—another trick this great singer has up her sleeve. Mary J.
