Cursive broke their six-year silence in 2018 with an expectedly grand yet surprisingly fiery return to early form. Vitriola marked a reunion with their original drummer Clint Schnase, the induction of cellist Megan Siebe to the Nebraska quintet, and hearkened pleasantly to the sound that defined them on their 2003 breakout The Ugly Organ: dramatic, swirling, angsty, and incredibly calculated art-emo. It was a refreshingly aggressive and pointedly political outpouring from the band’s ringleader, Tim Kasher. But in retrospect its 44-minute run-time does feel insufficient at containing its seam-bursting energy.
Get Fixed, which arrives just over a year since Vitriola, is not-so-much the leftovers from those sessions, but a genuine companion piece. According to Kasher, he’s been writing non-stop over the last few years, and there were so many fierce intra-band debates about the tracklist of Vitriola that they decided to divvy up the bounty of songs into two separate albums. Kasher and Co. remain distraught by pervasive socio-political disasters, but here the songs are jerkier and more sonically raw than the theatrical maximalism of its predecessor.
Ironically, Get Fixed doesn’t seek to repair the shattered American consciousness it laments about. But Cursive’s linking of orchestral post-hardcore and fitful emo-punk provides solid inspiration to get the masses up and moving. © Eli Enis / Qobuz
