The great German conductor Erich Kleiber died on January 27, 1956 -- the 200th anniversary of Mozart's birth. The week before that, hale and hearty, Kleiber performed a concert with the Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester featuring the music of two composers, Carl Maria von Weber and, naturally, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With the exception of one work, that concert is commemorated on this 2008 Preiser Records' disc. To say it is an unmitigated triumph would be an exaggeration. The Cologne musicians have their merits -- the wind soloists are outstanding and the players as a whole have tremendous enthusiasm -- but their ensemble is all too often scrappy and their attacks are all too frequently ragged. But in the end, this is a triumphant performance. Kleiber's clarity, energy, and intensity are still astounding after all these years. His Weber overture and symphony have power, romance, and, better yet, dedication, while his Mozart symphony has depth and breadth and his Four German Dances have charm and wit. While the listener may miss Mozart's Oboe Concerto, any Kleiber fan will likely cherish this disc. Preiser's radio-based recording, though a little fuzzy in tuttis and a bit harsh in climaxes, still presents a clean and balanced image of a real orchestra in a real place.
