In the early years of his career, Eric Church often deified Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings in interviews and his lyrics (as he does on this album's banjo-fueled "Country Music Jesus" and swoon-worthy "Like Jesus Does"). But with Chief, he proves himself a star that wannabes will look up to. Church confidently exerts both muscle (the swamp blues of "Creepin’") and swagger (the juke-joint burner "Keep On"). "Hungover & Hard Up" sways bittersweet and low, and shows off his backwoods poetic chops: "The bottle in my hand is loaded and I ain't afraid to use it tonight." "Drink In My Hand" is a "workin' for the weekend" anthem that veers on the right side of novelty. True, it’s a bit cringeworthy when the narrator of "Homeboy" encourages a younger brother to ditch his "hip-hop hat" for a life baling hay. But the ode to nostalgia that is "Springsteen" is irresistible, and the torch song "Over When It’s Over," which compares dwindling love to "the last long drag on a Marlboro Light,” soars courtesy of a duet with Joanna Cotten. © Qobuz
