There is only one other recording of the Seventh by this splendid conductor, leading the Hague Philharmonic in a 1964 recording, and it was not successful. Surprisingly poor sound made both the Nonesuch LP and Preludio CDs uncompetitive. To hear Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) at his best in the Bruckner Seventh, one must hear this 1938 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic. Schuricht leads a fine orchestra in a performance full of nice touches, but free of eccentricities. This disc should appeal to fans of the conductor and the composer, and collectors of historic recordings.
