Taken from Keith Jarrett's final European tour in 2016—before he suffered the stroke that now prevents him from performing in public—this magnificent concert was recorded in Bordeaux on the 10th anniversary of the Jazz & Wine Festival. It presents the pianist in a context largely similar to that captured on the last two solo albums released in recent years by ECM (Munich 2016 and Budapest Concert). In this album, Jarrett is committed to the succinctness that first emerged in his solo work in the mid-2000s whilst still conveying his sense of song and trance-inducing rhythm, which has been his signature sound since the 1970s. He dives into this recording without a safety net, ready to go wherever his musical exploration might lead him.

Keith Jarrett uses this concert less as a performance space and more as an opportunity for experimentation. He’s never more authentically himself than in his solo performances, allowing the fertile paradoxes that drive his musical discourse to emerge in these fascinating ‘off-the-cuff compositions’, each affecting the direction and evolution of his style in real time. His piano can sound convoluted, dark and chaotic and then suddenly become brighter following moments of clarity and serenity. The music performed by the pianist that evening was incredibly emotive. It goes to show that Jarrett, far from indulging in an egotistical staging of himself (as some have criticised him for), seems to be harder at work now than ever before. This is a great record that’s undoubtedly up there with the numerous other solo masterpieces by this improvisational genius. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
