In film circles, the concept of the auteur—that commanding artiste whose stamp resonates to every nook and cranny of a finished work—has been out of style for decades. But it’s always applied to the genre-recombinant filmmaker John Carpenter, whose work breathed new life into horror, adventure, sci-fi, and horror-adventure films from his epic 1974 debut, the eco-thriller Dark Star. Why, Carpenter even went so far as to craft his own, synth-heavy, evocative soundtracks for most of his cult classics!

Speaking of fashion, those instantly recognizable retro sounds from classics like They Live, Halloween, and Escape From New York began to sound highly of the moment when forward-thinking Brooklyn-based label Sacred Bones brought Carpenter out of semi-retirement in 2015. First they released new music Mr. Carpenter created with son Cody and godson Daniel Davies, using modern gear but still sounding like they were playing racks of old school synths. They played around and made cool, cyberpunk themes to imaginary films.

After highly enthusiastic crowds welcomed a first music tour, the family band playing both classic themes and the new jams, a second Lost Themes record was released, followed in 2017 by Anthology: Movie Themes 1974–1998. Fans went bonkers for what’s essentially a weird old guy covering his own work in part because aesthetically, the re-recordings held together more cohesively than a mere compilation of greatest hits would. Which brings us to its sequel, and genre filmmakers love a sequel (when they’re allowed creative control, of course).

Anthology: Movie Themes 1976-1988 is a delightful set; any fan needs to listen, to be transported to a confrontation with Snake Pilssken or an encounter with ugly capitalist aliens. Half of the music derives from the first three Halloween films, and They Live; it’s so good. The distinctive drum machines, heavy synthesizer swaths, and wailing 1980s guitars do not sound very 2023. Oddly, that lends it both a playful vibe and makes it all sound surprisingly vital. © Mike McGonigal/Qobuz
