For about ten years, Guido Minesky and Hervé Carvalho have been mixing the sounds of Cairo and Beirut with those of Chicago and Detroit, under the Acid Arab alias. Their first two albums featured a host of guest vocalists, and this third one is no exception, seeing the return of Algerian rai singer Sofiane Saidi, who released the hit ‘La Hafla’ on Musique de France in 2016. You’ll also find the psychedelic Turk, Cem Yıldız, who’s been around since their first album (on the track ‘Döne Döne’); the Moroccan, Ghizlane; Algerian rai singer Fella Soltana, who came out of retirement to lend her voice to the incredible ‘Gouloulou’; and the Syrian Wael Alkak on the dark, mental techno of ‘Ya Mahla’ (a track that proves Acid Arab is all about confronting ideas rather than assimilating sounds). These tracks—whether disco or techno—would stand alone, even without the ‘oriental’ arrangements. This album also draws inspiration from beyond the grave, reviving the voice of the legendary Rachid Taha by using an improvised vocal, which was recorded on the telephone one evening in Belleville.
