On connaît peu Manfred Gurlitt en France. Ainsi d’ailleurs qu’en Allemagne, et tout considéré, il est sans doute plus célèbre au Japon où il vécut de 1939 à sa mort en 1972 ! Par malheur, il composa un opéra Wozzeck quatre mois après Berg, et s’obstina dans un langage qui sembla rapidement dépassé dès la fin de la guerre. Cela dit, sa Goya-Sinfonie de 1939 baigne encore dans l’atmosphère d’un Hindemith ou de certains Weill (on pense à la Seconde symphonie), tandis que les Vier dramatische Gesänge ...
