Quel charme ! Quelle délicatesse ! Quelle invention ! Pour ce quatrième volume de chansons écossaises harmonisées et instrumentées par Haydn, l’auditeur aura le choix entre 65 petites perles toutes plus extraordinaires les unes que les autres. Ces œuvres furent commandées en 1802 par l’éditeur William Whyte, après le succès phénoménal des quelques 350 œuvres similaires que Haydn avait écrites entre 1791 et 95 à la demande d’autres éditeurs.
Est-il possible que le compositeur soit encore plus inspiré qu’il ne le fut déjà pour les premières mélodies… est-il possible que son imagination ne se soit pas tarie après tant de pièces de la même essence ? Eh oui, c’est possible. Chaque mesure apporte son lot de charme, de tendresse, inlassablement. Et pourtant, détail un peu troublant, certains arrangements (les quinze derniers, semble-t-il) ne sont pas de Haydn… mais de son élève Sigismund Neukomm. Haydn, 70 ans passés, avait délégué le boulot, tout en se réservant le dernier regard critique, de sorte qu’il remania les pièces pour les rendre plus haydniennes. Petite escroquerie entre amis…
Un quatrième volume aussi indispensable et remarquable que les trois premiers.
