PRÉSENTATION

Voici quatre CD bourrés d’œuvres pour luth solo de Dowland – ou pour orpharion, un instrument inventé en Angleterre au 16ème siècle, analogue au luth mais tendu de cordes métalliques dès l’origine, alors que le luth est équipé de cordes en boyau. Si le luthiste Jakob Lindberg a également sélectionné quelques œuvres dont l’attribution à Dowland reste problématique, il a écarté celles dont, de nos jours, on est certain qu’elles ne sont pas de lui, à la lumière des dernières recherches musicologiques.
    Quoi qu’il en soit, la petite centaine de pièces suffit largement à comprendre le personnage que fut Dowland, du plus profond mélancolique (avec son Lacrymae, qui le rendit véritablement célèbre de son vivant, et que Britten a repris trois siècles plus tard) au plaisant farceur Mrs White’s Nothing, en passant par les morceaux d’essence guerrière, sans oublier ses phénoménales fantaisies chromatiques, quatre étonnants chefs-d’œuvre particulièrement hardis et inventifs dans leur écriture torturée, leurs dissonances brutales et leurs enchaînements diaboliques.
