Amahl and the Night Visitors fut le tout premier opéra spécifiquement écrit pour la télévision (un autre ouvrage du même genre, naturellement, c’est de Britten), et diffusé pour la première fois à Noël 1951. Car Amahl est une variation sur l’histoire des Rois mages : un enfant handicapé et mythomane, Amahl (chanté par un enfant, justement), est miraculeusement guéri tandis que sa mère pauvre est miraculeusement enrichie, par les trois mages.
